How To Attach A Data Disc To A Virtual Machine And Initialize It For Use

In this article, i will show you how to attach a managed disc to a Virtual machine using the azure portal.

First, you must ensure you already have an account with Microsoft with subscriptions.

Sign in to your Microsoft account and proceed to your Azure portal.

Create a resource group where your virtual machine resides.

Before this time, you must have learn how to create a virtual machine

Every running system has two separate disc on which the system runs. the Operating system disc(OS Disc) and the data Disc(DD)

The disc created during the setup your Virtual machine is called Operating system disc (OS Disc) and the size created is as shown above.

Only Operating system information resides here. Meaning, Information in this disc are meant for system use. Peradventure, if any of these information got missing, your OS will not function properly and it will be advisable you reload your OS.

The Second part is the Data Disc. The data disc can be created as shown below.

Search for and select a Virtual machine from list of active virtual machines.

On the Virtual machine pane, select Disks

On the Disks pane, select Create and attach a new disk

In the new disk drop down, make the selections you want, and name the disk.

Select Save to create and attach the new data disk to the VM

The Type of disc created here is the Data disc which can be scale up at any given time depending on the current job.

Now that your Data disc had been created, you need to initialize the disc .

Initialize a new data disk

Our data disc created above will not be available until you initialize the disc.

To initialize a data disc,

First , Connect to the VM

Download the RDP file which contains information to connect to your virtual machine.

A login Prompt requesting for your login name and password to your virtual machine.

Supply these information in the login prompt and your virtual machine will open

Select the Windows Start menu inside the running VM and enter diskmgmt.msc in the search box. The Disk Management console opens.

Disk Management recognizes your new disc ,and the Initialize Disk window appears.

Verify the new data disk and select OK to initialize it.

The new disk appears as unallocated. Right click anywhere on the disk and select New simple volume. The New Simple Volume Wizard window opens.

Proceed through the wizards requirements and click the finish button.

Close Disk Management
